Barrie's Downtown Theatre will not be ready in time for the opening of our shows on our scheduled June 30th date.

June 2011

Theatre by the Bay is extremely excited about our 10th Anniversary Season! With rehearsals well underway for both of our spectacular shows in July, things are really ramping up. I wanted to make you aware of a recent change to the venue for our 2011 season. Due to unforeseen circumstances, Barrie's Downtown Theatre will not be ready in time for the opening of our shows on our scheduled June 30th date. We will be having our first preview on July 1st and still running until July 16th.

The City of Barrie has worked diligently with the construction team to try to have the space ready for us and we thank them for their efforts to do so but unfortunately the timeline is just too tight. We all want to ensure the quality of the build and give the utmost attention and respect to the high building code standards. This multi-use facility is an important part of the downtown's revitalization and it will serve as a focal point of culture and activity in the City's core for many years to come. We do look forward to having our permanent home at the Downtown Theatre starting with our 2012 Season.

We are happy to announce however that with assistance from the City of Barrie, we have secured Georgian Theatre (at Georgian College) 1 Georgian Drive in Barrie. The design team is excited about how we're going to change the space to accommodate this facility. As they say, the show must go on and we look forward to having you join us July 1st to JULY 16th for Theatre by the Bay's 10th Anniversary Season at the Georgian Theatre. Contact our box office for tickets at 705.735.9243 or see our website at www.theatrebythebay.com.

Thank you for your understanding. We are looking forward to an amazing season bringing the highest standard of the performing arts to the City of Barrie and surrounding areas.

CSI: New York's Robert Joy Stars in Theatre by the Bay's 10th Anniversary Season

March 2011

NEW THEATRE at a NEW TIME of YEAR - JULY!

Artistic Producer/Founder Larissa Mair has officially unveiled the 10th season of Barrie's own Theatre by the Bay. “We are very excited with our stellar line up this year," said Mair. “Our main production, presented by TD is William Shakespeare’s mystical and magical work, The Tempest starring CSI star Robert Joy as Prospero.” Tickets are $25 for regular admission, $23 for seniors/students and $21 per ticket for Groups of ten or more. All prices include HST.

Robert Joy says,

“THE TEMPEST treats us to a wondrously wide range of theatre: comedy, drama, magic... Every character is transformed in one way or another. Shakespeare's ambition seems to be to transport, and ultimately transform, every member of the audience. This is the Master at the height of his powers, and in Prospero he's given us a Master of Ceremonies for one of the world's greatest evenings of theatre.

"I couldn't be more excited and eager to rehearse and perform at Theatre by the Bay in beautiful Barrie. To play this role, I'll be using everything I've learned over my 40 year career in Newfoundland, Toronto, New York, and Los Angeles, not to mention my 23 year career as a father!”

Robert's real life daughter Ruby Joy will be playing the role of his daughter in the play.

A Theatre by the Bay season would not be complete without the Young Company returning with another high energy and interactive tale written by the incomparable Clark Harris. This year the ever popular kids show will feature “Treasure Island – The Pirate Musical” presented by Meridian Credit Union and Kahler Law Firm. Prices for the young company are $12 per ticket and $10 for groups of 10 or more. All prices include HST.

Both shows are presented in a new venue at Barrie’s New Downtown Theatre at a new time of year for Theatre by the Bay – this year instead of August the season runs from:

June 30th to July 16th, 2011

The public is encouraged to book tickets early to avoid disappointment. Call the box office at 705.735.9243.

This year is also very special because of our new home in Barrie's Downtown theatre at the historic Five Points and our new time with our presentations taking place in July. To have a venue that focuses on arts and culture enables the mentoring of youth and the nurturing of young talent. This is an important objective of Theatre by the Bay,” added Mair.
