2012 Summer Season Casting notices

  1. Main Company Productions | Man of La Mancha & Merry Wives of Windsor
  2. Young Company Production | Jacob Two-Two Meets the Hooded Fang

Main Company Production

Theatre By The Bay is now accepting resumes & photos for our Summer 2012 productions of Man of La Mancha (MLM) and Merry Wives of Windsor (MWW); both shows will be rehearsed and performed at Barrie, Ontario’s new Mady Centre for the Performing Arts.

The eight-week contract runs from July 3 – August 26 with a possible extension through September 1. These two productions will be cross-cast to enable the company to rehearse and perform in rep with the first performance of MLM on/about July 26 and MWW on/about August 10. Actor/singers who have experience with both Shakespearean text and musical theatre would be appreciated. Dancing is an asset but not essential for most characters. Stage combat is a plus for the musical.

Theatre By The Bay is a proponent of both cross-gender and cross-cultural casting. We anticipate casting the Acting Company with 10 Equity actors and 3 – 5 non-Equity actors; all actors will be cast in both shows, and some actors will play more than one role in each show. Equity members cast in these productions will be engaged under an Equity form of contract (ITA contract – Category F; the Equity minimum for this category is currently $671.50, our non-Equity minimum remains at $400).

Clearly note whether or not you are a member of CAEA and/or ACTRA in your cover letter & resume.

Man of La Mancha will be directed by TBTB Artistic Director, Scott A. Hurst, and Merry Wives of Windsor will be directed by Lee Wilson. The Music Director and Choreographer have yet to be announced. CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS for each play are listed below and were prepared by the Directors.

Actors will be asked to present a Shakespeare monologue as well as sing at their initial audition. An accompanist will be provided and both directors will be present at this audition. Equity members will be seen first at all open audition calls. CAEA members: please bring your membership card to the audition.

The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 6:00 p.m.

Those actors granted an audition time shall be notified in the week of January 9. Toronto auditions will be held on or about January 19 & 20 and Barrie auditions will be held on January 21; location TBA. Callbacks will be approximately one week later in both centres.

Man of La Mancha

Directed by Scott Hurst

MALE CHARACTERS:
The Duke / Doctor Corrasco | baritone, low C to Db, age 35 – 55
As the character of the Duke, he is the sardonic foil to the Governor; however, when he plays Dr. Sansone Carrasco he is Antonia’s fiancé, who thinks that Don Quixote is mad and insists that he come home to be treated for his malady. Doctor Corrasco cares for money, power, prestige and himself.
Prisoner / Captain of the Inquisition / Muleteer | age 30 – 55
The Captain is an imposing and cruel man. The Captain is a recurring, non-singing role but he will be doubled with one of the Muleteers (or the Barber) in this production. Vocal type not specified as a result.
Prisoner / Padre / Juan | tenor, F to high G, age 40 – 50
The Padre is a kindly sympathetic cleric, who shows compassion to Alonso Quijana/Don Quixote. If we choose to double cast the Padre with a Muleteer then we will adjust the vocal types for the other Muleteers to achieve a balance. All of the Muleteers are rough men, fit, and capable of being course, and threatening. Some should be capable of lifting.
Prisoner / Muleteer / Barber | tenor, D to high G, age 30 – 5
In addition to playing a Muleteer this character will also play the cameo role of the Barber. The Barber is a mildly comedic singing role. All of the Muleteers are rough men, fit, and capable of being course, and threatening. Some should be capable of lifting.
Prisoner / Head Muleteer / Pedro | baritone, low D to D, 22 – 35
The lead Muleteer, rough and ruthless. All of the Muleteers are rough men, fit, and capable of being course, and threatening. Some should be capable of lifting.
Prisoner / Muleteer / Anselmo | tenor, A to high F, age 20 – 40
All of the Muleteers are rough men, fit, and capable of being course, and threatening. Some should be capable of lifting.
FEMALE CHARACTERS:
Prisoner / Aldonza | soprano, low A flat to high A flat, age 35 – 55
A wild, lusty woman with a jaded look at life from experience. A serving woman and a part-time prostitute at the inn, Aldonza is rough on the exterior, but has a gentle heart inside and yearns to believe what Don Quixote tells her. Quixote falls in love with her and insists her name is Dulcinea and that she is a beautiful, gentle woman. She must be fit and must be comfortable with engaging in stage combat, as she endures a sexual assault by the Muleteers. This is a major singing role.
Prisoner / Antonia | mezzo, C to high F, age 18 – 32
Antonia is Alonso Quijana’s niece who is about to marry Dr. Carrasco. She is a little too aware of what others think of her and her uncle and she allows herself to be dominated by her fiancé. Actor must be capable of holding her own vocally in the trio “I’m Only Thinking of Him”.
Prisoner / Housekeeper | mezzo, low F to high F, age 40 – 70
Alonso Quijana’s housekeeper, strong of body and religious/moral convictions. Actor must be capable of holding her own vocally in the trio “I’m Only Thinking of Him”.
Prisoner / Maria / Fermina | various, 30 – 55
Maria is the Innkeeper’s nagging wife; she is comic to a degree and suspicious of charitable behaviour. Fermina is a serving girl in the Inn and may be doubled with the role of Maria. If we include the “Moorish scene” in the play Fermina plays the Moorish girl and she dances.
